Does anyone else hear a string buzz or several strings buzzing? ...or it could just be my laptop speakers and/or my constantly buzzing ears

I suspect it's his fingerings more than the guitar's set up - might be wrong though. But yes, I hear it. Apart from that, a pretty good sound IMO.

It's the player and the sound set-up, not the guitar, that's the problem(s). First off, I can't be certain, but it looks like he's using a Shure SM58 mic, a vocal mic designed for stage work and singing/talking with the musician's mouth almost on top of the mic, rather than a good condenser mic designed to pick up sound from a distance. It sounds like he's about at the limits of volume on his settings so there's lots of distortion, and his playing is also hard and percussive. Listen at the beginning when he's talking, and you already hear distortion. I wouldn't judge anything about this guitar's tone and sound from this recording. Period.

Alan, FWIW, every listing I've l looked at for the J45 M says the top is sitka spruce, not mahogany. For instance:

Steve, thanks for that. Seems like the J45 M is a spruce top - but just found these :-

Clearly not a standard model, but there seem to be some out there - apparently a limited edition of 75 was built in fairly recent times. There is one for sale on UK Ebay - I looked at it but I don't particularly want a mahogany topped guitar. Clearly a rarity but I am not a collector of such things - or collector period.

I'm with you, Alan: I don't particularly want or need an all-hog guitar, but yep, you've found some Gibsons that are all-hog. That's really poor advertising on Gibson's part, IMO—I would have expected that a J45 M would be all-hog, but then I looked and found that it wasn't the case for most of the models.

Shows what I know: very little!  Big Grin
